uSpace Blogs Now Visible

Following the recent upgrade to uSpace, CiCS is pleased to report that personal blogs in uSpace are now visible to the outside world and can be located using standard search engines including Google. This exposes your blog to the widest audience possible and makes uSpace a viable alternative to external blogging services for Sheffield staff. Blogs within private uSpace groups and space, however, still remain hidden keeping sensitive group collaboration private. Therefore, if you would prefer to maintain a uSpace blog that is hidden from the outside world you should first create a private or restricted space and create your blog in there. Information about uSpace blogs is available from the uSpace web pages.

uSpace Web Pages

You can find your colleagues' blogs in the Blog Directory, which by default contains all personal uSpace blogs. In addition, shared blogs from uSpace groups and spaces can be added manually, as can blogs from services outside of uSpace. A blog can also be removed from the blog directory at any time, so we encourage staff who have empty blogs, or who no longer update their blogs, to remove them from the blog directory. To add or remove blogs use the 'My Blogs' link from the left-hand column.

iPad Micro Sims

Apple iPads can access the Internet by connecting to wireless networks at home, at work or in wireless hotspots provided by airports and cafes. In addition, iPads can also be set up to connect to the Internet when out and about using the mobile phone networks. To do this they need to be fitted with a micro sim. If you have an iPad that you use for work purposes and are interested in ordering a micro sim please contact the Voice and Data Support Team in CiCS. Charges apply.

Ever Deleted a File and then Wished you Hadn't?

If you store your files on networked filestore, such as your personal U drive or departmental shared M drive, then it is very easy to recovered deleted files. Make sure you are logged in via the usual Novell login screen. Then in My Computer you can right-click any folder and select Salvage to display a list of all files that have been deleted from that folder. You can then select the file from the list and click the Restore button to bring the file back from oblivion. There are many benefits from storing files in networked filestore, see the CiCS web pages for more information.
