Annual Report 2015

CiCS provides services to support Learning and Teaching, Research, the Digital Workplace and the Global University

Here are our highlights from 2015.

To support learning and teaching in the Diamond

We designed 1000 innovative, student-led study spaces over 6 floors

We installed a TV studio, editing suites and creative media booths

We built a 64-bit Managed Desktop packed with academic software

And designed a new timetabling model to optimise use of the teaching space.

To further support learning and teaching

We ran the TELFest networking and showcasing event

And launched the TELHub online community and resource centre.

We recorded every undergraduate lecture for 2 departments

And built the infrastructure to offer recordings of every undergraduate lecture next year.

We delivered bespoke AV and technical solutions for AchieveMore

And we reduced startup times for PCs in lecture theatres.

We designed and built the award winning Higher Education Achievement Report (HEAR)

And we built the digital Academic Transcripts for taught postgraduates.

To provide the best possible support for research

We collaborated with the research community to define a new research IT service

And secured approval and resource to build a research IT service to support the University’s aspirations.

To meet the IT needs of the research community

We worked with Insigneo on Predictive Medicine, biomedical data management and related big data analytics

We worked with the Polaris cardiovascular imaging lab on requirements for our High Performance Computing upgrade

We built a bespoke, secure intranet for the shop-floor machines of the Advanced Manufacturing Research Centre

We provided the complex compute platforms to help SCentRo model interactions of swarming robots

We contributed statistical expertise to Linguistics’ research into Czech verb endings

We provided computer power for Geography’s climatic modelling of Greenland’s ice sheets

And built the myResearch portal to bring research resources and tools together.

To support the digital workplace

We developed the functionality to send personalised emails to enquirers and applicants

And piloted the student eFile to start replacing paper documents.

We negotiated substantial savings on new mobile contracts for staff

And released mySAPmobile, the first staff mobile app.

We extended wireless coverage to the whole campus

And introduced the ability to print from mobile devices.

We made hospital wifi and online services available on campus

And made University wifi and online services available in hospitals.

To ensure staff were skilled in digital services we introduced Lynda.com online training

And to ensure they were safe we designed a new online information security course.

To support the Global University

We produced the videos that showcase academic excellence on iTunes U

We delivered IT services to Thessaloniki and Nanjing

And for Sheffield we designed bespoke technical solutions for the Mobile University.

And to deliver value for money

We ran five Process Improvement Unit projects that freed up £420,707 a year in staff time

And won an award from The Institute for Continuous Improvement in Public Services.

We won the Value for Money award from Audit Committee for My Sustainable Print

Which won the Green Impact Best Energy-Saving Idea award (and a tree!).

We won the Green Impact Gold award for our commitment to green working practices
